Sometimes you want to keep this personality in tact and therefore avoid individuals or situations that trigger you. There are times however, when you realize you need to change your personality in order to improve or better yourself. A mystic would explore this line of thinking and conclude that one might cross the road once the pain of status quo is greater than the fear of the unknown.
Our bodies are very efficient. When we have a strong emotional response to an event, or experience emotional responses to a particular event over a period of time, our bodies learn to associate similar event with the emotions. In this case, if an individual were to experience a similar event, the body would automatically produce the learned emotion. This stimulus - emotion association can be unlearned and replaced with one that better serves the individual.
